One day on the Highveld, on gas.

Scroll through an ordinary day in a Centurion home and watch what keeps running when the grid doesn’t. Tap anything that glows.

  1. 05:40

    First shower, before sunrise.

The geyser lights the moment the hot tap opens and goes out when it closes. No tank kept hot all night.

  2. 07:15

    Coffee on the hob.

A flame you can see is a flame you can turn down. Two burners, gas on glass, flame failure on both.

  3. 18:00

Stage 6. The suburb goes dark.

Streetlights out, block by block. In this kitchen supper keeps going: five burners and a gas oven do not need the grid.

  4. 19:30

    Braai on the stoep.

Coals at the right glow, a skottel for the pap. Totai makes the braai and the bits that go with it.

  5. 21:00

    Cold out, warm in.

A patio heater for the last round of stories, a rollabout heater in the lounge. Both have flame failure and tilt cut-off.

  6. Sat 06:00

    Out of town by sunrise.

Tent up by the river, coffee on a cartridge stove, a 3 litre camping geyser for a warm wash.

The lights went out. Supper didn’t.

An electric geyser is a kettlekept hot all day.

A 150-litre tank sits in the roof, heated around the clock so it’s ready when you are. A gas geyser has no tank: open a hot tap and it heats only the water that runs through it, then switches itself off.

    Electric storage geyser

Keeps 150 L at 60 °C day and night. Loses about 2 kWh a day through the tank walls, even when nobody showers.

    Gas geyser

Lights when the hot tap opens, goes out when it closes. No tank, so nothing to keep hot and nothing to lose.

Gas water heaters are installed outdoors or with a flue, by a registered gas installer who issues a Certificate of Conformity.

Burner: the flame grows with the flowWater moving through the coilTwo D cells make the spark, no plug neededA Totai 12 L gas geyser with its front cover off. Open a hot tap and the moving water lifts a diaphragm in the water valve; from 2.5 L/min it pushes the gas valve open and the two D cells fire the spark. The burner then heats only the water running through the copper coil, by 25 °C at up to 12 L/min (about 21 kW); past that the water comes out cooler. Close the tap and the flame goes out. Nothing is kept hot while you wait.

    Smell gas?

Close the valve, open the windows, no flames and no switches. Then check the connections with soapy water.

    Smell gas? Do this now.

    1. Close the cylinder valve or the main gas valve.
    2. No flames, no smoking, and don’t switch lights or plugs on or off.
    3. Open doors and windows. LP gas is heavier than air and settles low.
    4. Once it has cleared, brush soapy water over the connections. Bubbles show the leak.
    5. Don’t use the appliance until a registered gas installer has checked it.
